Changing the maps layout

Garmin device

In order to ensure the best possible readability on the respective device, by default the “Region.img” maps for your Garmin are displayed in a wider layout (Wide Layout) than the maps displayed in Basecamp (Thin Layout).

The Thin Layout will be applied to your new Garmin IMG map (gmapsupp.img) if you only install single tiles using Basecamp (MapInstall) or Mapsource. To change the layout in your Garmin unit, I provide a tool:

Replacetyp uses gmt.exe. Gmt.exe is the command line version of the GmapTool program by AP www.gmaptool.eu.
GMT is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 licence. To view all details have a look at AP’s site: https://www.gmaptool.eu/en/content/license .

Instructions

  • Unzip ReplaceTyp.zip to a directory of your choice.
  • Keep all the supplied files in the same directory.
  • Drag gmapsupp.img onto ReplaceTyp.cmd.
  • Select Thick or Thin Lines.

Done.

Caution: Never drag and drop Garmin images from other sources – you will lose the original style and the map will no longer work!

Basecamp

If you prefer to see the wide layout in Basecamp as well, all you have to do is change the so-called TYP file for the map. This is best done with JaVaWa GMTK.

Let’s start by downloading ReplaceTyp.zip:

Unzip the content to any directory. Remember your directory, we will need the 2022p.typ and the 2022pn.typ.
Download & Install JaVaWa GMTK
Have a look at the little video where I change from the Thin Layout to the Wide Layout to see how changing the TYP file is done with JaVaWa:
